How to calculate the consumption of glue for thermal insulation correctly

Glue is an essential accessory when buying insulation made of foamed polyethylene or foamed rubber. It is a solution of synthetic rubber with the addition of a modifier and a mixture of organic solvent.

Adhesive for technical insulation is used for both sheet and pipe insulation

How much glue do I need? – you ask. What is the expense?

In the tables below, you can get acquainted with the approximate calculation of the adhesive consumption for thermal insulation.

CALCULATION OF ADHESIVE CONSUMPTION FOR SHEET INSULATION:

Type of insulated surface

Consumption, 1L / sq.m.

Rectangular air ducts, flat surfaces

10

Pipes with a diameter of more than 114 mm

6

CALCULATION OF GLUE CONSUMPTION FOR PIPE INSULATION:

Thickness of pipe insulation, mm

Consumption, 1l/ p.m.

6 mm

150

9 mm

120

13 mm

100

19 mm

70

25 mm

For example, if you want to glue 20 sq. m. of sheet rubber insulation (the thickness of the insulation is not important), then when applying glue to the entire surface of the sheet, the consumption will be 2 liters. And if you apply glue in strips or dots, then the glue consumption will decrease by two or even three times.

The glue is applied with a brush to both surfaces to be glued. The recommended glue application temperature is 15-20 ° C, humidity is 60-65%.

  • For highly adhesive-absorbing materials (e.g. wood), it is recommended to apply the adhesive twice with an interval of 10 minutes between applications. For non–absorbent adhesive surfaces - a single.  Drying. The adhesive film must be dried in natural conditions.
  • The required drying time depends on the temperature and is usually 5-10 minutes. The end of drying is easy to determine by touch - the glue ceases to be sticky. Gluing. The products should be pressed against each other with adhesive films and compressed (pressed) or rolled with rollers.
  • There is no need to leave it under load.  The clamping force is 3 - 3.5 kg/ cm2. Attention!
  • The time between drying of the glue and compressing should not exceed the open time for this glue - 10 minutes. After 7 to 10 minutes, the strength of the adhesive seam reaches 70% – the maximum. From this moment on, the connection can be operated. Further increase in strength occurs slowly, within 30 - 40 hours.

The adhesive for technical insulation will connect the surface reliably and safely at medium carrier temperatures up to 105 degrees. The compound will be resistant to weather influences and aging.
